It was a good week to be a student-athlete at East High School. You probably walked away with a District Player of the Week if you did.
“We’ve got some good athletes in our league,” said Kimble Anders, the Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) athletic director. “What impresses me more is that they are making the grade as well.”
In football, this week’s recipient was Anthony Johnson, a senior running back, led the Bears to their first win of the season against Olathe Christian, 38-0. Johnson, on ten carries, rushed for 200 yards and scored two touchdowns in the first half.
“I wanted to play more in the game, but Coach Smith wanted to save me for our game we played Monday,” said Johnson. “He did what he always did and that was what was best for the team.”
The other recipients included Jordan Bryant, who won for boys cross country; Magali Rojas, girls cross country; Erica Mendenhall, volleyball; and Jose Silvia, soccer.
