In distributing Player of the Week honors, Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) Athletic Director Kimble Anders shared his assessment of Bears soccer player Juan Vargas with East High’s Principal Thomas Herrera stating simply, “He’s the real deal.”

 “When I came out and watched him play last week, he played like a man among boys,” Anders said. “I expect him to win this award a few more times before the season is complete.”

Anders made the rounds Wednesday to area schools to hand out the weekly awards. While it is only the third week of the season in soccer, Vargas is the District’s first two-time recipient.

“He’s just an all-around good kid,” said Herrera. “He does it in the class and on the field.”

Other recipients included Anders going back to his old job at Northeast to deliver POW honors to Mohamed Awyes and Durrell Calhoun who were selected for cross country and football. Calhoun shared the award with Westport’s Brian Townsend.

“The message is pretty much the same when I talk with our kids,” said Anders. “Just do your best on the field and in the classroom be respectful and good things like this will continue to happen.”
