The East Bears soccer team (7-0) faced their biggest challenge of the season on Sept. 15 against Cair Paravel, a team that defeated the Bears last season 4-1 before going on to an 11-1-2 record while winning the state championship in soccer for Christian schools.
The Bears ended up knocking off the reigning champs 7-2, behind another solid game from the District’s Player of the Week, Juan Vargas, who scored three goals in the win. In the last five games played, Vargas has scored a total of 15 goals.
“Our starters played well early on in the game, so this gave us the opportunity to play our younger kids a little longer,” said Bears head coach Narwarrior Mackey. “This was definitely one of the wins we wanted to have this season.”
Also scoring in the game for the Bears, were Alejandro Romero (last week’s player of the week) with two goals, and Alejandro Cisneros, Edgar Lugo each closed out the scoring with one goal each.
In the second game, Lincoln Prep Blue Tigers (0-5) were unable to capture their first win, losing a close game to Van Horn 1-0.
In volleyball, the Northeast Lady Vikings picked up their fourth win of the season (4-6) defeating the Renaissance (25-12, 25-19).
“Our girls have been practicing hard and wanted to bounce back from the Spikefest, so this was a good win for them,” said Vikings head coach Linsey Morningstar.
The Lady Bears from East (8-7) split their games yesterday, defeating Central (0-9) (25-11, 25-10), while falling to Hickman Mills (25-10, 25-4).
