It was a tough weekend to be a member of the Interscholastic League, as all five schools in the second week of district play fell short in their respective games over the weekend.
Friday night action saw the Central Blue Eagles extend their winless streak to nine games (0-9) this season as they fell to Platte County, 41-6. The Blue Eagles kept it close for the first half of the game, but early in the second half, Platte County opened up with five straight touchdowns.
"This wasn't the way I envisioned our season being with a bunch of young players," said Central head coach Henry Newell. "However, rebuilding or not, we are going to go into our final game (against Staley) and fight until the end."
Staley, the top ranked team in the Kansas City Star's small-class poll, defeated the Westport Tigers, 35-0.
"Staley defensively was as good as we expected them to be and they did a good job of keeping Brian (Townsend) out of the end zone," said Tigers head coach Dan Stanley. "We'll go back and prepare for Platte County, try to win that game and hopefully qualify out of districts."
The Lincoln Prep Blue Tigers (2-7) suffered a tough loss Friday night to St. Pius X, losing on the road to 26-14. The lone bright spot in the game came from running back Steven Rambo's 43-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Tigers return to the field for their final game of the season Thursday, as they take on Pembroke Hill.
While the East Bears didn't have to travel to Springfield to face their opponent, the result was the same as the Bears fell to Springfield Glendale, 41-6. The Bears are 1-8 on the season.
In the league's final game of the weekend, the Northeast Vikings (4-5) lost their second game in district football, this time to Raytown South, 42-0. The Vikings will close out their season this week against Truman.
