 About

Southwest Early College Campus (SWECC) is a Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) math and science campus for students in grades 6-12. Students will have the opportunity to take college-level courses and prepare for the rigors of college through a mix of training and relationships with professors and master teachers from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. By the time a student graduates from SWECC, they will have earned 20 to 60 hours of college credit from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

The school will open in August 2008 for students in grades 6 and 9. To enroll, please click the “Enroll Now” link on the right side of this page.

Located on the site of the former Southwest High School, the state-of-the-art SWECC campus will allow students to utilize an on-site planetarium and science laboratories that rival that of many universities. The school will offer a project-based curriculum with extended-day and extended-year opportunities.

Students within the Kansas City, Missouri School District interested in math and science and committed to earning a four-year college degree are encouraged to complete the application process. Families interested in enrolling for the 2008-09 school year should call the KCMSD Admissions Office at (816) 418-7505.

The campus is a partnership of the District, UMKC, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, (Kansas City’s Partnership for Regional Education Preparation) PREP-KC and the Kansas City Area Life Sciences Institute.

 History

Success has been a common theme since Southwest opened its doors as a comprehensive high school in 1927.  This school has many notable alumni across several segments of society, including Henry and Richard Bloch (founders of H&R Bloch), Richard Smalley (1961 Nobel Prize winner), James B. Nutter (noted real estate magnate), and Michael Jones (pro football player).
