From 1867 to 1885, the School District of Kansas City, Missouri stretched from the Missouri River to what is now known as 30th Street and from State line to Prospect Avenue. In 1885, the District extended to Jackson Avenue when part of the Oakley District was annexed.
The School District was able to increase in size through the following process:
- The School Board in an adjoining school district, upon receiving petitions to do so signed by the required number of eligible persons, held an election to vote on the question: Shall this School District be annexed to the Kansas City School District?
- If a majority of the votes favored the proposal, notice of the request to be annexed was officially conveyed to the school district named as the proposed recipient.
- The Board of Education in the recipient district considered the matter and may have, by majority vote of the Board, approved the request. Complete dissolution of the adjoining district and annexation to the recipient district were immediate when the approval was taken.
- A school district in Missouri may not of its own volition annex another school district.
